Brand names of drugs that contain methylphenidate include Ritalin (Ritalina, Rilatine, Ritalin LA (Long Acting)), Attenta, Concerta (a timed-release capsule), Metadate, Methylin and Rubifen. Methylphenidate is a mild central nervous system (CNS) stimulant. It is claimed to have a 'calming' effect on humans who have ADHD, reducing impulsive behavior, and facilitates concentration on work and other tasks. Adults who have ADHD often claim that methylphenidate increases their ability to focus on tasks and organize their lives.

Ritalin, often referred to by slang names Kiddy Cocaine, Vitamin R, R-Ball, Rids, Smarties, Diet Coke, and Skittles, is increasingly becoming one of the most accessible recreational drugs for many adolescents. It is easily accessible from siblings, classmates or friends, and it is cheap compared to the normal schoolyard menu.

For many teens, buying Ritalin is easier than buying cigarettes or beer.
